Did you know that in our lifespan, on average, we spend 5 years and 4 months on our social media platforms? And this number is growing daily! Social media is here to stay, so we need to be able to support our students, helping them to be responsible and mindful social media users. Fear, pressure, lack of sleep, and physical illness can all be barriers to your student’s ability to be present in the classroom and achieve academic success—these also happen to be triggers and symptoms of social media anxiety. In this presentation we will discuss social media anxiety, identifying the potential triggers and symptoms and the effects that they have. We will talk about how to create healthy boundaries around social media use and the value of human to human connection. We will also review the positive impacts that social media has and how we can continue to benefit from it but with balance. And finally, we will explore how you can take this information to your students, helping them to build awareness, take control, create boundaries and become more responsible and mindful social media users.
