This presentation will discuss how Wabi,(侘 simplicity, quietude) and Sabi (寂, partina of age and loneliness), the Japanese aesthetic concepts, have served as the source of inspiration for developing the Creative Writing & Origami program for the Acute Psychiatric Unit for Children & Adolescents at Mayo Clinic. Wabi Sabi holds that beauty exists in things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.  This principle promotes finding beauty in unconventional spaces, such as the broken, damaged, and the aged. In this presentation, we will discuss 1) our study, which examined how adolescents expressed interest and engagement through creative activities based on Wabi Sabi and, 2) the creative culture that resulted through the unique collaboration between a professional writer-educator, undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota Rochester, and nursing staff at the Acute Psychiatric Unit for Children & Adolescents at Mayo Clinic.
